There was a time, not long ago, when the world looked towards the ‘Islamic World’ for inspiration in the fields of philosophy, science, medicine and art. Today, Muslims themselves, let alone the rest of the people, can barely recognise the names of their illustrious predecessors, never mind their teachings and counsels. We are a society in which people appear to be wandering despairingly in search of answers to today’s ills.

This book provides a guiding light, through Islamic teachings and Counsels of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, his Companions, their Successors (Taabi’een), leading Scholars and the Sufiya, (the venerable Saints) may Allah be pleased with them all.

The key themes that run through the some 200 Counsels in this book are our misguided fascination with apparent glitter and display, our passion for pretence, our laziness when it comes to endeavour and our indifference to good and bad (deeds and people!). Indeed we display a likening for bad and a distaste for good!

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said ‘the Deen is good Counsel’ and this book aims to provide reminders and Counsels and provoke reflection and self introspection. It is not a book that has to be read from cover to cover; it can be picked up at any page for each Counsel is capable of standing alone and benefitting the reader.

This work is a translation of the book Danish e Hijaaz (the wisdom of the Hijaaz) written by Shaykh Muhammad Din as-Siyalvi al-Azhari.
